It pays to look behind you…

“Sometimes, the best image is behind you”. We were coming back from a location shoot at Lake James and I wanted one more shot to finish the story. There were lots of trees at the location so we didn’t get to see the sunrise like I wanted. As we crested the hill on the way home, I looked in the rear view mirror and there it was!! While trying not to run off the road, I jumped out of the car and clicked off a few frames as dark settled in. This is why a tripod goes 360 degrees!

Sometimes, the best way is through…

Sometimes, the most literal image isn’t the one that communicates the best. An example of this is photographing surgical students in a cadaver lab. Yes, body parts everywhere, in various stages of surgery. If you’re shooting for images that depict the students, how they concentrate, how they look while working, it may not be the best idea to show the grisly details of the bodies. Sometimes, the best way is through. This image was shot through the shoulders of other students working together. It shows the concentration of the student and a potential applicant could look at this and think, “yes, that could be me.” The cropping was done in camera. It follows some of the general rules for positioning the subject but breaks the rule of not cropping into the subject. Besides, I think the rules are just “guidelines”! The only post work was to increase the saturation a little bit to help the blues of the surgery gown and the warmth of her face. Look ahead, look behind, and always, look through.

Adding Dynamic Color – Industrial Location Photography

When I get to a location, I like to look around where I am and get a “feel” for the space and the people working there. Then the question becomes, how can I enhance it? On this location shoot, I wanted to add interest to a shot that was…ok, but needed a little a punch. All right, a lot of punch. Blue was a logical choice because of the company shirts. I added a blue gel to the lights I was using. This can’t be done after in post.

The color you add has to make sense, can’t conflict with the subject, and above all, can’t send the wrong message. Red for instance, would have been like an emergency room!! The original, more traditional lighting is below and it’s not bad, but the top one with the gels makes a much more emotional impact. What do you think?

Chemical Industrial Shoot

This project involved mixed lighting and both interiors and exteriors. They had just finished a major upgrade so all the spaces were very clean. This helps because you don’t spend a lot of time trying to hide backgrounds, trash, and other things.

We also had both hands on work and lots of technical items to punctuate the high-tech lab environment.

So we ended with some great imagery accentuated with lots of color.

Final Thoughts from Farm Bureau 14- Location Commercial Photography

Alamo St. Market

My recent trip to San Antonio Tx for the Annual Farm Bureau Convention/Meeting was the learning experience I expected. The farmers and ranchers I meet and interact with are always generous, courteous, and well mannered. Plus they were some fabulous boots (see photo). As we do mainly commercial photography throughout the year, this trip always starts the year with good people, good food, and some great imagery.

Some of the good eats were Bananas Foster (almost caught my coat on fire…exciting stuff) and little peach empanadas.

There’s also a lot of skulls/masks here. Some are very colorful.

The main speaker of the conference was retired Commander Stanley McChrystal. This man served honorably for many years and he was a great speaker.

So now a new year begins. Lots of images to share. Thanks to Mary and Mike and Ken. They make the long hours easy to bear and are fun to be with.

Can you still swim?

at least they let you swim…

You get to the beach, you have your beach chairs, cooler, blankets, frisbee, lotion, radio (ipod with speakers?)…and you have to buy beach tags to play on the sand and all the other stuff has to go back in the car! You can still swim and other….things (not on the sign! Besides, sand gets everywhere). I remember the old days, where you could do all this and more as long as you were nice to your beach neighbors and picked up your trash (not on sign, either).

So have fun at the beach this holiday weekend. The beaches are open, the water is still cool and the smell of the ocean is intoxicating. Just make sure you pick up your trash and be home by dark:-)

Architectural Photography

We are doing a lot of Architectural Photography now and put together this little piece. We’re always looking for an interesting angle to photograph when interpreting the architect’s design. Also, shooting at dusk gives us a unique perspective on the building,the lighting and space around it.

It’s also great to photograph the architects, developers or designers. We also photograph the real workmen/women on the job but that’s for another blog post.

Architecture Photography-More Images of Nashville TN

Walking Bridge to Nashville

I wanted to post one more Architecture Photography image from my trip to Nashville TN from a few weeks ago. Now that the rains have stopped and we can see blue sky again here in Charlotte. This image does illustrate a point that you don’t always need perfect blue skies to get a great shot.

The other note on this image is that a few years ago, this river flooded…over the tops of the banks seen here in the background and up almost to the top where the bridge deck is. Massive amounts of rain in a very short time. I have other shots of this bridge and the city on Flickr and you can get a different look at the banks and imaging the water going over the bank and 2 blocks up into downtown. We’re talking “Noah” time.

If you have seen my previous blogs you might notice that our website has changed. There are a lot of people to thank for this and I will do so in later posts when we work out all the bugs. Please leave me your comments and opinions of the site.

As I said, I have more shots of Nashville on my Flickr site even the ones I posted on Facebook while I was there. Of course, a shout out to the Farm Bureau and all our local farmers. Bring a kid to a farm. Let them know their food doesn’t come from the grocery store but from the ground and a pig and a cow (just sayin’).
