Which way to go?

You ever have one of those days where your compass is a little …”lost”.  Well Krystel Green of CATS always knows where her busses and trains are going, where they’ve been, and probably who’s riding! She’s the Senior Marketing Rep for CATS and we had just finished up doing Annual Report photography of one of her committees.  When I said “grab the sign and smile” she gave me her best pearly whites.

So when you want to know where CATS or LYNX goes, go to ridetransit.org or just ask Krystel…she’ll set your compass straight…or north, south, east or west!!

Editorial Photography

This editorial photography assignment was about photographing patients of a physical therapy group while they were using specific equipment.  There is actually someone on the other end of these shoes! There is some really high-tech equipment being used these days but you can’t ever forget the tried and true rubber ball.  Plus it comes in very nice colors (I AM partial to green).

 

 

Can you still swim?

at least they let you swim…

You get to the beach, you have your beach chairs, cooler, blankets, frisbee, lotion, radio (ipod with speakers?)…and you have to buy beach tags to play on the sand and all the other stuff has to go back in the car!  You can still swim and other….things (not on the sign! Besides, sand gets everywhere).  I remember the old days, where you could do all this and more as long as you were nice to your beach neighbors and picked up your trash (not on sign, either).

So have fun at the beach this holiday weekend.  The beaches are open, the water is still cool and the smell of the ocean is intoxicating.  Just make sure you pick up your trash and be home by dark:-)

Architectural Photography

We are doing a lot of Architectural Photography now and put together this little piece.  We’re always looking for an interesting angle to photograph when interpreting the architect’s design.  Also, shooting at dusk gives us a unique perspective on the building,the lighting and space around it.

It’s also great to photograph the architects, developers or designers.  We also photograph the real workmen/women on the job but that’s for another blog post.

Editorial Photography: One man’s trash (or scrap)…

Scrap Magazine: L. Gordon Iron & Metal Company

This image represents the 3rd and 5th generations in the family business of L. Gordon Iron and Metal.  Saul and Zack (grandson) are both active in the business which has been operating in Statesville since 1917.  They do the usual things a scrap yard does: Crush cars (very cool), sort metals, etc. and then ship them out to smelts locally and regionally.

We got asked to do some editorial photography for Scrap Magazine representing all the generations now working at the yard and after satisfying the magazines needs, I wanted to get just these 2 together so show the contrast in generations.

A scrap yard is a dirty, dangerous, place with lots of sharp edges and we had just had some rain so it was also muddy (sound familiar Charlotte).  Lots of blues and greys and this 1 large copper block of about 2000 pounds of copper.  With the mound of steel, aluminum, and other metals in the background plus the copper block, this became a very expensive set!

Location photography – In the airport

I seem to be in a lot of airports these days and it reminded me of a location photography assignment we had inside an airport.  I have photographed at airports before and when the airport is your client, things are easier.  You get your bags checked but you’re in a line of one.  Then you can go many places the public can’t because you have a security person attached to your hip.  Many things have changed over the years.

This assignment was for Black Enterprise Magazine and Keith Haywood is an executive for this Bojangles at the end of a concourse at this very busy airport.  A perfect application of using small flash.  The logistics were tricky because I had to go through the TSA check-point and they put my two bags through the ringer.  I had packed light (no pun intended) but it still took 15 minutes.

The question was how to show busy airport concourse, restaurant, subject, and not get run over by the crowd.  I positioned my light stand in the middle of the concourse loaded with the small Canon EX580 flash with small soft-box and had my assistant stand next to it in the wave of oncoming people.  I found a pole to kneel behind.  Wait for the crowd, shoot a bunch.  Reposition, wait for the crowd,  you get the idea.  We did five positions in about 40 minutes during the ebb and flow of passengers coming and going.  No one ran over the light, my subject, my assistant or me.  Couple of close calls with folks on their phones!!  Then, on to chicken and biscuits.

Future Farmer, seeder, planter,driver,farrier,milker,rider, etc…

I have a special place in my heart for farmers so my 2 cents for best commercial last night was the Ram Truck “so, God made a farmer”.  Here’s a link in you want to see it again: http://youtu.be/AMpZ0TGjbWE.  I get to spend some time with farmers every year but it’s not enough.  I grew up next to a farm, have cousins and uncles who are farmers, worked at a place that hauled farm goods and produce.  I can’t begin to know what it takes to be a farmer but I know that there’s never enough appreciation for what they do.

So when you look at that apple or head of broccoli or box of cereal, think of the hands and hearts it took to get it to your grocery store.  Eat well!!

It only hurts a little…

I am a big fan of acupuncture and have had many treatments.  It helps a variety of ills.

We were shooting  medical photography at a large hospital and they are offering many alternative types of treatments.  Unfortunately, the model wasn’t quite prepared for the needles to be put in her hand.  In fact, this is our brave art director.  Now she knows what a model goes through.  And this isn’t the most sensitive area for the needles.  She winced a little bit but then relaxed and actually got something great out of the mini-treatment.  All for the good of the shot.

Plus, it only hurt a little!!
