Case Study – Hospital Photography

The Challenge

One of the largest integrated healthcare systems in the United States needed a robust library of campaign imagery to support communications across a sprawling national footprint. The brief called for more than just clinical photography — the client wanted visuals that authentically captured their two core brand pillars: high-quality healthcare and compassionate service. That meant photographing real medical staff, hospital employees, and patient experiences in ways that felt genuine rather than staged, all while navigating the operational realities of an active hospital environment. Patient privacy, HIPAA considerations, fast-moving clinical workflows, and a tight two-day production window in Miami, Florida added layers of complexity. The imagery also needed to be versatile enough to serve a wide range of end uses — social media, advertising, annual reports, trade shows, recruiting collateral, and the company website — meaning every frame had to work harder than a typical campaign shot.

The Production

Michael LoBiondo Photography traveled to the Miami-area hospital for a two-day shoot, working closely with the client’s marketing and communications team to pre-plan shot lists across multiple departments and patient scenarios. Pre-production included careful coordination with hospital administrators to identify cooperative staff, secure patient releases, and schedule shooting windows that wouldn’t disrupt clinical operations or compromise care. On location, the approach was documentary-style with intentional art direction — moving fluidly between patient rooms, nurses’ stations, treatment areas, and common spaces to capture authentic moments of caregivers at work. Lighting was kept natural and minimal wherever possible to preserve the genuine feel of each scene, with portable strobes used selectively to elevate key hero shots. The two-day pace required tight logistics, fast setups, and a small, agile crew that could read a room and capture meaningful moments without becoming a distraction in a working hospital.

The Results

The shoot produced a versatile, high-volume image library that the healthcare system now deploys across both internal and external communications. The imagery is being used in social media campaigns, paid advertising, annual company reports, trade show booth graphics, recruiting materials, and throughout the organization’s national website. By capturing real employees and patient experiences at one Miami-area location, the client gained a body of work that authentically represents the skilled, compassionate care being delivered at their facilities across the country — a single shoot serving a national brand narrative. The depth and flexibility of the final library positions the client to support multiple campaigns and communication needs without returning to production for months to come.
